Providing Feedback

providing feedback

An important part of being a good manager is knowing how and when to provide feedback. Feedback can be a useful tool to improve the overall health and culture of your team. So, how should a manager practice this crucial responsibility?

Best practices on providing feedback include:

Don’t wait. First and foremost don’t put it off as it may be forgotten or may not have the same level of impact later.

Feedback for all. While it seems more important to provide feedback to new employees, a veteran employee would benefit just as much and would appreciate his/her work being noticed.

One-on-one meeting. Provide feedback in one-on-one meetings so you can focus solely on the person and their performance. This will also prevent the employee from feeling embarrassed.

Recognize their efforts. Feedback doesn’t have to be in the form of criticisms. Notice your team’s efforts and praise each member’s hard work.

Be specific. Simply saying “great job” or “do better” is not enough. Be specific about the expectations and goals.

Provide advice. For feedback to truly be productive, a manager should also provide useful advice.

Ask for feedback in return. Ask for feedback on how to improve your own management efforts. This will not only improve your skills, but will also improve the culture of your team.

Follow up. Monitor how the feedback has been used and follow up with each member.
