First-Time Manager
You’ve just been hired for your first management position; you’ve waited for this day for so long and it’s finally here! As a first-time manager, it’s okay to be nervous. However, you will need to adjust quickly and jump right into your role since others are depending on you. So, how do you adjust, succeed, and thrive as a first-time manager?
See below for a list of things you need to do immediately as a first-time manager:
Ask questions and listen. The best way to understand your team is to listen to what they have to say. Hold a meeting and ask questions to learn what needs to be changed, expectations or concerns they may have, new ideas, etc.
Get to know your team. You cannot adequately manage a team that you don’t understand. As discussed in a previous blog post, a manager needs to learn the S.H.A.P.E. of their team.
Address issues immediately. Instead of letting issues continue in fear of rocking the boat, address the issues immediately as to move forward in the best way. Don’t be afraid to switch things up.
Set goals. Make the goals and expectations clear and measurable with set timelines. It’s extremely important to monitor the goals and reward or correct as needed.
Adjust quickly. The quicker you can adjust, the quicker your team can adjust. Whether you need to read books on management, find a mentor, or hold weekly meetings it’s important to do what you can do to jump into the role as a manager as soon as you can.
Be confident. Remember you earned this position. If you lack confidence your team will have a hard time having faith in you as their leader.
